This little tool at style.org combines looks and use nicely. It joins the rank of lots of State of the Union/speech visualizations:
- Presidential Speeches Tag Clouds is good and goes back to the 18th century
- the Power of Words colors words in speeches by category which is very interesting
- this infographic from NYTimes is good
- this tagcloud at onetwothree.net seems kind of cluttered
But I like the simplicity of the approach here. Each vertical axis is a different speech and each horizontal line is a sentence with length by number of words. You can then color sentences based on a pair of words. Here I have “al Qaeda” in red and “Iraq” in blue. Another key thing is the ability to forage through the data yourself and create a unique URL for your pair of words.
